Grind to 80-90% with a dime-thick edge, specify steel and target HRC, ship flat - and get back better stainless results than most home kilns can produce.

Here’s the secret experienced makers wish beginners learned sooner: you don’t have to do your own heat treating. Professional heat treating services exist specifically for knifemakers, they’re inexpensive per blade, and for stainless and powder steels they’ll usually beat the results of a first-year kiln owner. Why Send Blades Out?

  • Stainless and PM steels demand equipment most hobbyists don’t have: a precise furnace soak in stainless foil, aluminum plate quenching, and cryogenic treatment (see why in our heat treat metallurgy guide). A pro shop has all of it, dialed in.
  • The economics favor it early on. A quality kiln is $700–1,500+ (see the oven buyer’s guide) before plates, foil, and liquid nitrogen. Professional heat treating runs a few dollars to roughly $20 per blade depending on steel and batch size — you can heat treat dozens of knives before approaching kiln money, and put the savings toward a better grinder (see what knifemaking really costs).
  • Consistency and proof. Pro services hardness-test the blades they return. If you sell knives, “professionally heat treated and Rockwell tested” is real credibility.

Peters’ Heat Treating (Meadville, PA)

Peters’ Heat Treating has a dedicated Blade Division and is the default answer when makers ask “who do I send blades to?” Their blade pricing includes hardening to your specified HRC, double tempering, cryo treatment, straightening, and hardness testing. They handle everything from single custom blades to production batches, and steel suppliers themselves (including New Jersey Steel Baron) point customers to Peters’. Paul Bos Heat Treating (Buck Knives, Post Falls, ID)

The most famous name in knife heat treating. Paul Bos built his reputation heat treating for custom makers for decades; the operation now runs inside Buck Knives’ Idaho facility under his protégé Paul Farner, and still accepts blades from outside knifemakers. Especially respected for stainless steels.

How It Works, Start to Finish

  1. Grind before heat treat — but not to final edge. Standard practice: profile the blade, drill all holes, and grind bevels to about 80–90%, leaving the edge roughly dime-thick (0.030″+). Hardened steel is far slower to grind, and a too-thin edge can warp or crack during hardening.
  2. Fill out the service’s form. You specify the steel (they need to know — this is another reason to use known steel, not mystery scrap) and target hardness. Not sure what HRC to ask for?   3. Pack flat and ship. Blades ship in rigid packaging (taped between plywood or cardboard stacks). Include the form; keep your name on everything.
  4. Turnaround. Typically a few weeks depending on the shop’s queue and whether you hit a batch run for your steel. Most makers batch several blades per shipment to spread the shipping cost.
  5. Finish work after return. Blades come back hardened, tempered, tested — ready for final grinding, hand sanding, and sharpening.

Send Out or Buy a Kiln?

The practical rule most makers follow: send out stainless; do simple carbon steel yourself. Carbon steels like 1084 are genuinely doable at home (even without a kiln) and teach you real skills. Stainless stays outsourced until your volume — or your curiosity — justifies a kiln plus quench plates plus a cryo setup. Plenty of full-time professional makers never bring stainless heat treating in-house at all; there’s no shame in using the same shops the pros use.
