Troubleshooting

Grinder Walking or Shifting During Use

Work back from what it is doing to what caused it, then to the fix that addresses the cause. Nothing here needs a sign-up.

The flow

Work it in this order

Causes first, then the quick checks, the fix, prevention and the stop-work point.

  1. Likely causes

    • The grinder isn't bolted down to a bench or stand, just resting on its own weight and rubber feet
    • Uneven bench or floor surface causing the base to rock instead of sitting flat
    • Grinding pressure or angle being applied in a direction that works against a lightweight or narrow base
    • A stand or bench that itself isn't heavy or rigid enough to resist the forces of grinding
Gray cast grinder mounting foot with an empty bolt hole resting on a worn steel bench, a short scrape ending at its corner
  1. Quick checks

    • Check whether the grinder is actually bolted or clamped to its surface, or just sitting on it
    • Set a level across the mounting surface to check for unevenness
    • Watch which direction the machine shifts, toward you, away, or sideways, since that points to where the pressure is unbalanced

  1. Fixes

    • Bolt the grinder down through its base mounting holes to a bench or dedicated stand rather than relying on friction alone
    • Shim or level the mounting surface if it's uneven
    • Add weight to a lightweight stand (sandbags, a shelf with stored material) if bolting down isn't an option

  1. Prevention

    • Treat bolting the grinder down as a one-time setup step done before the first real use, not something to get to later
    • Recheck mounting hardware periodically, vibration over time can work bolts loose
    • Build or buy a stand rated for the weight and forces a 2x72 grinder actually produces under load
  2. When to stop

If the grinder shifts enough that your hands or the workpiece could contact the belt unexpectedly, stop immediately and secure the machine before continuing, an unsecured grinder is a real safety hazard, not just an inconvenience.

When the machine is the cause

Flex, a soft platen or a tracking knob that will not hold can show up as a bad grind. I machine the parts, hand-assemble, track and test each Torus grinder in Sterling, Illinois.
