Grinding & Sharpening 26C3

Easy grinding, exacting finishing: sharp fine ceramics with religious cooling at 63-66 HRC thinness, decarb ground past everywhere the edge lives, hand-sand ladders and hamon etch-and-polish that the clean structure rewards. Bench: fine waterstones through 8000 plus bare strop unlock the whole point. 8-12 dps fine work.

26C3 is bought for one reason — the finest edge simple steel takes — so its shop story is less about surviving the grind (easy) and more about not squandering the finish. The steel cooperates completely; the standards are the challenge.

On the 2×72

Annealed 26C3 grinds like butter with any decent belt; post-heat-treat at 63-66 HRC it wants the thin-hard-blade discipline: sharp 120-220 ceramics, light passes, religious cooling — at razor and wa-kitchen thinness, one dwell un-tempers the whole project. Leave honest decarb allowance from heat treat (the skin is shallow but real) and grind past it everywhere the edge will live. For razor hollows, this is the classic wheel steel; for kitchen flats, platen passes finish clean and fast.

The Finish Ladder

This steel rewards hand-sanding like nothing else on the site — its clean fine structure takes 400-800-1500 progressions to a glassy surface that alloy steels only imitate, and hamon work (a first-rank clay steel, per the hamon guide) demands the polish-and-etch ladder to show its activity. Budget finishing time generously: nobody buys Spicy White for a 220 scratch finish.

At the Bench

Every stone works; fine stones justify themselves. Take the edge through 1000-4000-8000 class waterstones and onto a bare-leather strop and 26C3 delivers push-cutting keenness that resets your reference for sharp. Angles: 8-12 dps razors and fine kitchen, 15 for general use. Touch-ups are three strop strokes; teach the owner that rhythm and the edge never actually dulls.

Common Mistakes

A 220-grit finish on a steel bought for refinement. Dwelling once on a near-finished razor-thin section. Leaving decarb skin under the future edge. Skipping the strop rhythm lesson at handoff.

Safety

Razor-thin hard sections blue in one lapse and can crack under an aggressive catch – light passes, constant dunks, edge-trailing habits. Fresh 26C3 edges cut on contact during every later step: tape it for handle work.
