Ladder Pattern Damascus: Step by Step

Ladder pattern is made by cutting evenly spaced grooves about one-third deep across both faces of a welded damascus bar - staggered so top and bottom grooves alternate - then forging or grinding the bar flat. The layers bow around the removed material and etch as bold rungs across the blade.

The ladder is the classic first damascus pattern — bold, high-contrast rungs marching across the blade — and it’s the perfect introduction to the core idea behind almost every pattern: damascus patterns are made by cutting or moving material so the flat layers get exposed at an angle. Cut into the layers, flatten the bar back out, and the layers bow around where the material was removed. That’s the whole trick.

Step by Step

  1. Forge your billet into a clean, flat bar a bit thicker than your final blade stock — you’ll be sacrificing roughly a third of the thickness to the pattern. Around 100–200 layers reads beautifully as a ladder; fewer layers give bolder, sparser rungs.
  2. Lay out the grooves. Soapstone or marker, evenly spaced lines across the bar (perpendicular to its length). Even spacing is the difference between “ladder” and “random stripes” — measure, don’t eyeball. Typical spacing runs 1/4″ to 1/2″; tighter spacing = busier pattern.
  3. Stagger the two faces. The grooves on the bottom face fall halfway between the grooves on the top face. This is what creates the alternating rhythm — grooves directly opposite each other thin the bar dangerously and read as blobs, not rungs.
  4. Cut the grooves ~1/3 of the bar’s thickness. Options, easiest first: the edge of an angle grinder wheel, a round file or chainsaw file, a ball-end mill in a drill press or mill, or grooved dies under a press if you have one. Round-bottomed grooves flow better under the hammer than sharp square cuts (sharp inside corners invite cold shuts).
  5. Flatten — by forge or by grinder. Two valid routes:
    • Forge route: bring the bar to forging heat and forge the grooved faces flat. The pattern runs deeper through the bar and survives further forging — the traditional choice if you’re forging the blade to shape.
    • Grind route: grind the high spots down flat, removing everything above the groove bottoms. Crisper, more controlled rungs — the stock-removal choice. You paid for that crispness in steel dust.
  6. Profile, grind, heat treat, etch. From here it’s a normal blade: 1084-recipe heat treat, then etch to reveal. The rungs sharpen dramatically in the acid.

Making It Yours

Vary groove spacing (tight = fine rhythm, wide = bold), groove width, or combine techniques — a gentle twist before laddering curves the rungs; grooves cut at an angle instead of square across give a slanted ladder. The raindrop pattern is literally this same process with dimples instead of grooves — learn one, and you’ve mostly learned the other.

Uneven groove spacing (measure, don’t eyeball). Cutting grooves directly opposite each other instead of staggered. Going deeper than about a third and creating thin spots. Sharp square-bottomed grooves that fold into cold shuts when forged. Grinding the pattern right back off with careless post-flattening stock removal.
