Hammer Technique for Bladesmiths: Control, Rhythm & Saving Your Elbow

Set the anvil at knuckle height (relaxed fist rule), stand ~45 degrees with soft knees, grip loose and choke up for precision or back for power, and swing with the whole arm - elbow free, close to the body - letting gravity and anvil rebound do the lifting. Stay at or under 3 lb, practice accuracy cold on a chalked X, and treat any joint pain as a setup error to fix that day.

Watch a working smith and the hammer looks effortless — because it is. Good hammer technique isn’t strength; it’s a setup that lets gravity, rebound, and a loose grip do the work while your body steers. Bad technique is why beginners gas out in twenty minutes, wander their blows, and — the expensive part — develop the elbow tendonitis smiths call “blacksmith’s elbow.” This guide is the technique layer under the forging sequence and bevel work.

Set Up the Geometry First

  • Anvil height: the knuckle rule. Stand beside the anvil, arm hanging relaxed, fist closed — your knuckles should graze the anvil face. Too low forces a bent back; too high steals your swing and loads the shoulder. This one adjustment fixes half of all beginner pain.
  • Stance: ~45° to the anvil, feet shoulder-width, knees soft. You’re standing the way you’d chop wood, not the way you’d type.
  • Work height meets the hammer flat. The blow lands with the hammer face flat on the work at the bottom of a natural arc — if you’re reaching or chopping downward at an angle you didn’t choose, move yourself or the work, not your wrist.

The Grip (Looser Than You Think)

Hold the hammer like a bird: firm enough it can’t escape, loose enough it can breathe. A death grip transmits every impact into your tendons, kills the rebound that should be lifting the hammer for you, and tires the forearm in minutes. Grip position is a throttle: choke up near the head for light precise work (bevels, tip work), slide back for power (drawing, heavy moving). Between blows, the hammer should almost float in your fingers.

The Swing: Whole Arm, Free Elbow

Lift with the shoulder and whole arm — not a forearm flick. The two elbow mistakes are a locked elbow (turns your arm into a crowbar that hammers your own joint) and a flared chicken-wing elbow (wanders the blow and loads the shoulder): the elbow stays relaxed, close to the body, moving freely. Let the hammer fall and accelerate it, don’t muscle it — and let the anvil’s rebound throw it back up (a live anvil returns real energy; that’s the point of the ball-bearing test). Rhythm beats fury: moderate blows in cadence out-forge occasional heroic smashes, and they land where you aimed.

Accuracy Is a Drill, Not a Gift

Cold practice is free: chalk an X on the anvil face (or a nailhead in a stump — the classic) and put fifty relaxed blows on it before the forge is even lit. Watch the work, not the hammer — your hand follows your eyes. Accuracy earned cold means hot steel gets moved on purpose: every blow that lands where the last one did is a blow you don’t grind out later (uneven hammer texture is future hand sanding).

Protecting the Elbow (Read This Before It Hurts)

  • Stay at or under ~3 lb until your technique earns more — heavier hammers are strongly associated with elbow injury in every smithing ergonomics writeup, and blade work rarely needs them (the 2–2.5 lb recommendation stands).
  • Pain is data, not weakness. Aching forearm = grip too tight. Sore elbow = locked arm or too-heavy hammer. Sore lower back = anvil too low. Adjust the setup the same day; tendonitis that gets a foothold takes months to leave.
  • Short sessions with intent beat marathons — forging is interval training, and the steel spends half its time in the fire anyway. Rest when it does.
